The Ring Goes Dark: Preparing for The 24 Nurburgring

April 10, 2015 By Bruce Ledoux Leave a Comment

The Ring Goes Dark: Preparing for The 24 Nurburgring

Today begins trip 3 of 4 to compete in the 24 hours at The Nurburgring.

The journey to The 24 Nurburgring race has been nothing short of unbelievable thus far, but it is getting overwhelming. Every 3 weeks, we fly back across the Atlantic to Germany.

2015 brings about a new set of rules designed to ensure the contestants are appropriately experienced before taking to the race. In previous years, anyone with a FIA $150 International Class C license could arrive & drive in any car they felt they could afford. This literally meant that a first timer that was well funded could land themselves in a GT3 class rocket ship and have at it.

This is what that feels like (start around 3:30):

The new rule set says that you must begin the process with a FIA International Class B. To get a Class B license you need to have competed in 7 national championship eligible races OR complete 5 ‘time trial’ type races at The Ring.

The next step (which is where we jumped in) is to then compete in two VLN series races and finish in the top half of the class. We were able to begin the process with an international Class B license due to the previous Rolex 24hr participation. The final step is to complete a mandatory safety course by the ADAC sanctioning body and you emerge with your “Class A Nordeschleife Permit”.

rally 2015This weekend is the 2nd race where we will have to finish in the top 50% of the class to qualify for the 24hr Race in May. We got lucky in race #1 with a class win. It will also be the first time I drive the 122 turn, 15+ mile circuit in the dark. Although I have dozens of night races and some of my personal best lap times under my belt, the size of this prospect leaves me excited & anxious all at once.

Candidly – the timing couldn’t be worse to go.

Work is having a breakout year leaving us fighting to keep up, the kids schedules are phenomenally busy with sports & parent teacher conferences – life is just so….well….full that a 2nd trip in 3 weeks hurts. This morning my 9 year old said to me, ‘Oh, you’re going AGAIN?’ It felt like my cell phone rang the entire way into the airport, the ticket counter, in security and down the jetway. It was a relief to switch to ‘airplane mode’.

Thank goodness my wife is the saint that she is. Her parting words as I walked out the door for the airport were, “Go, have fun and relax.” She is the real trophy.

flying over to the NurburgringSo off I fly. To Germany. Despite the long flights and the busyness I feel myself under the past 3 weeks, I remind myself that we have an amazing opportunity to raise funds through this venture. We’re lucky to be able to participate, and the hard work is well worth it when we accomplish our goals.

UPDATES:

We find ourselves in a class of four cars two of which are exactly the same as our BMW e90 325 - so there is reasonable competition. As we walked down the clock to faster & faster lap times, the use of our AIM data allowed us to find some easy upticks and co-driver David Quinlan qualified us on the pole position some 14 seconds ahead of the competition!!

We're thrilled to be starting from Pole Position in class and have 'Ring Meister Q taking the green flag. One set back we didn't expect was that our 3rd driver - Ring local Kurt Strube - was snagged by the new licensing process and not allowed to drive the race with TEAMGAM today. This was a disappointment to say the least, but also a scary variable. It means that Q & I will have to split the 6hrs of racing in a hot car on a complicated track. My cardio is not what it normally is and I'm worried that my 3rd shift may find me tired leading to either a mistake or slow lap times. It would be a shame to give away a potential win like that. We're focusing hard on diet, hydration and rest these past two days in preparation.

Our New Friend Jaxon Needs Our Help

Our New Friend Jaxon Needs Our Help

Look at those cheeks! Jaxon, pictured below is definitely a cutie. Plus, he’s got the charming personality to match.

Jaxon’s mother recently got in touch with us at GAM because they need our help, and now we are asking for all of yours too.20140914_122526

Jaxon has Spastic Quadriplegic type Cerebral Palsy, which, among other things, keeps him from being able to sit or roll from back to front.

Here is a little more information from Jaxons family on all of their hard work to help Jaxon, and where he is right now:

He suffered a major brain injury during birth leaving him with holes in his brain called bilateral cystic periventricular leukomalacia.  We found out just 10 days after his birth thanks to a routine head ultrasound run on all premature infants. By the time Jaxon was six months old he was diagnosed with Spastic Quadriplegic Type Cerebral Palsy. He takes medicine twice per day just so his limbs can be somewhat relaxed.

The people at Boston Children’s Hospital said to keep doing what we are doing. They told us that because Jaxon has Spastic Quadriplegic type Cerebral Palsy some treatments are off the table, like rhisotomy or the baclofen pump.

All of Jaxon’s doctors and therapists think he has such a great personality and that if we keep focusing on therapy he will reach his milestones in time! He currently receives aquatic therapy, speech therapy, vision therapy, physical therapy, and occupational therapy.

Through research and meeting with doctors, Jaxon’s family is looking to now begin a new type of therapy called MNRI. This therapy will take place with a specialist in Buxton, Maine, but first they need to meet with a few doctors who specialize in MNRI and will be able to formulate a treatment plan for Jaxon.

That’s where you all come in!

Jaxon’s family is currently trying to raise money to get to a conference in January to meet with these doctors in California. In order for them to be able to attend the informative 8-day conference, meet with the doctors, and travel back and forth, we will need to raise $10,550.

Can you help us help little Jaxon get the treatment and specialization he needs? Just type “For Jaxon” in the comment section below when you send your donation over. Let’s help this kid!

Meet Isabella, & Help Us Help Her

Meet Isabella, & Help Us Help Her

As soon as I heard Isabella’s story I reached out to the mother to get more details.

Isabella’s mom said:

On November 25th, 2010 life as we knew it was forever changed. Isabella (who was 4.5 years old at the time) and I had spent the day celebrating Thanksgiving with family and friends. Isabella was fine all day. Suddenly she became very sick. Isabella quickly became dehydrated, confused and disoriented. I had no idea when I brought her to the hospital that our journey was just beginning. Within 24 hours of being admitted, Isabella was literally crashing and dying before my eyes. Isabella had been diagnosed with sudden acute encephalitis from an unknown virus. [Read more…]
